The Good Food Easter Supermarket Taste Awards are announced today, revealing the best supermarket hot cross buns, Easter eggs, desserts and simnel cakes to enjoy over the Easter weekend.

To arrive at the final list of winners, nine supermarkets submitted their Easter treats to Good Food, across 12 categories. As always, during the rigorous, impartial judging in the Good Food Test Kitchen, all packaging is removed, and the expert panel of Good Food judges taste all items blind, overseen by an independent adjudicator. Comments and a score out of 10 are submitted for each product via anonymous online judging forms, and the final total score is compiled.

This year, the expert panel of Good Food judges tasted more than 100 different products taking several days to taste, score and select the winning products available from nine supermarkets. As well as the winners, the Good Food judging panel also awarded “Highly commended” status to high-scoring products that deserve recognition.

“Our expert team at Good Food spent several days testing Easter products on offer at supermarkets. We were impressed with the creativity and inventiveness of the supermarkets, and the winners prove you don’t have to spend a fortune to eat well at Easter.  The Good Food Easter Supermarket Taste Test winners are time-savers and good value, but for a counterpoint to all the sweetness, our Good Food Triple-cheese hot cross buns are satisfyingly savoury and straightforward to make. Plus, if you have any leftover Easter eggs try our quick Easter hot chocolate recipe. And there’s no need to waste leftover hot cross buns, use them in our recipe for Chocolate hot cross bun bread and butter pudding.”

Of the winning supermarkets, Sainsbury’s achieved success with five wins including Best Milk Chocolate Egg, Best Dark Chocolate Egg, and Best Vegan Egg, demonstrating the range of their chocolate offerings. Waitrose secured four wins for Best Novelty Shape Egg and Best Chocolate Hot Cross Buns, highlighting their creative product development.
Aldi took the crown for Best Classic Hot Cross Buns and Best Alternative Hot Cross Buns and M&S came top in Best Alternative Flavour Egg and joint wins for Best bunny and Best Alternative Easter Cake.
